William Billings along with Daniel Read, Timothy Swan, Justin Morgan, Oliver Holden, Lewis Edson, Jeremiah Ingalls, and others were self-taught musician who composed and compiled tunebooks and traveled around the country teaching in the singing schools.

Skiffle is a type of folk music with a jazz and blues influence, usually using homemade or improvised instruments such as the washboard, tea chest bass, kazoo, cigar-box fiddle, musical saw, comb and paper, and so forth, as well as more conventional instruments such as acoustic guitar and banjo. Skiffle and jug band music are closely related. Skiffle was particularly popular in Britain in the 1950s and 1960s.

Back in the 1940’s as a young boy I was introduced to the world of self-made music by my father (1903-1983) who sang and played the banjo uke and tenor banjo. There was no pretense here, just simple straight out stuff, much of it Tin Pan Alley.
