The Psalms were particularly commended for singing; James 5:13 asks, “Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.” Colossians 3:16 states “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.
Where shall my wondering soul begin?
How shall I all to heaven aspire?
A slave redeemed from death and sin,
A brand plucked from eternal fire,
How shall I equal triumphs raise,
Or sing my great deliverer’s praise.
Luther and his followers often used their hymns, or chorales, to teach tenets of the faith to worshipers.
A hymn is the praise of God with song; a song is the exultation of the mind dwelling on eternal things, bursting forth in the voice.
